This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. 1 Tim 1: 15

Magazines

Our church is affiliated to the Gospel Standard magazine, of which our late Pastor was the editor for 45 years until the end of 2015. The magazine is believed to be the oldest monthly religious magazine in existence and was started by William Gadsby, a well-known minister in Manchester, and his son John, in 1835. The magazine was commenced, in the midst of much opposition, to contend for the doctrines of sovereign grace, together with Strict Baptist church order, though it became widely esteemed by those whose order differed. About the year 1859 a controversy surfaced among Strict Baptists generally about the doctrine of the Eternal Sonship of the Lord Jesus, and the then Editor, J. C. Philpot, contended earnestly for the Reformation doctrine against those who held that the Lord Jesus was only a Son by office, or at least that he was not the Son of God from all eternity. The divisions which arose divided the Strict Baptists, those who clave to the scriptural doctrines espoused by the Gospel Standard became known as “Gospel Standard Baptists.”

The magazine still continues to maintain the same precious truths, though in common with most denominations, the circulation is considerably less than in its heyday in latter half of the nineteenth century, and we have much cause to lament the withdrawing of the power of the Holy Spirit from the churches. Nevertheless there are still many throughout the world who respect and admire its distinctive witness and we would be thankful for the Lord’s continued upholding mercies.

In 2009 a new quarterly magazine called ‘Perception’ was commenced, aimed at teenagers and young people, by Mr. J. R. Broome. Sadly after only 4 years he passed away. The magazine was then ably edited by our deacon Mr. T. H. W. Scott until retiring at the end of 2022. Since then the magazine has been edited by one of our ministers, Mr. T. J. Parish.
